Do you add exclamations to your messages? On the one hand, it may convey emotion in an otherwise toneless medium. On the other hand, it may just make you look emotional. Rather than rely on gut-feelings or anecdotal evidence, we tested it with 400 email readers in a randomized experiment. The results revealed that it may not matter as much as you think, on average, but with one exception.
